Still making waves after 32 years!
To survive in the marine industry for 31 years is pretty incredible. To not only survive but also to grow and continually improve is probably closer to a miracle. Yet, according to Roger Arkell, managing director of the
1973-founded Rogers Boatshop, there is nothing at all miraculous about his success. Instead, it is due simply to hard work, attention to detail and an absolute commitment to put people first, regardless of whether those people are employees, regular customers or first time boaties looking to realise their dream.
It is a philosophy that has clearly paid off. Many of his staff have been with him for considerable periods of time in fact his two top salespeople have been on the team for more than 20 years and this, in turn, reaps benefits for the business.
“When a client who has bought a high ticket item (such as a new boat) comes back to trade it after three years, the fact he can deal with the same salesman gives him a lot of confidence. “That customer instantly thinks ‘This man looked after me then, I can rest assured he will see me right again this time.” Being able to confidently advise clients on what boat is right for them is a skill that only comes with time and experience.
“It is one of our real strengths,” says Roger. “I’ve worked in the sales yard virtually every day for last 31 years, my Takapuna sales manager, Bob Mirabito has been doing the same for 25 years and Scott Little, Takapuna’s senior sales executive has been here for 21 years.”
Roger's Boatshop Albany
His son Nigel, who now owns 50% of the original Rogers Boatshop yard in Albany, carries on Roger’s “hands-on” tradition. Like his father, Nigel is rarely found behind a desk, much preferring to be with customers in the sales yard.

Our Strength - Our Brands
Yamaha Marine Outboards
“When you’re ready to go, so is Yamaha.” Roger Arkell. Rogers Boatshop has been selling Yamaha outboards since 1983. In those two decades they have proved their reliability over and over again the thousands of engines have delivered hundreds of thousands of hours of trouble-free boating with a warranty rate of less than 0.25%! “Yamaha outboards have proved so reliable, it’s been really hard to get them back for their 100-hour and 200-hour service. They just don’t give problems,” says Matt Lay, service manager at Rogers Boatshop Albany. “They’re outstanding we’ve still got customers using engines they bought from us in that first year (1983) and others who have clocked up over 4600 hours.”
Buccaneer Boats

News: The Albany boat storage centre.
“A new boat storage centre adjacent to the Rogers Boatshop Albany site is proving to be a huge boon for North Shore boat owners looking for a safe, secure and convenient place to store their boats. Rogers Boat Storage, which opened in autumn 2003, is able to accommodate 50 boat and trailer rigs and Rogers Boatshop Albany manager Nigel Arkell says many of the available sites are already permanently booked. “Albany and the surrounding areas have been growing at a incredible rate and, like on the rest of the Shore, many of these new dwellings simply do not have space to accommodate a boat.” Nigel Arkell says the Boat Storage centre is also particularly popular with those who have holiday homes to the north. “Rogers Boat Storage is based just three minutes from the Oteha Rd motorway junction, and also offers on-site management from 7am to 7pm, 7 days a week.” As an added bonus, boats stored at the centre can also be offered for sale at Rogers Boatshop Albany and storage customers also receive a 10% discount on all outboard and stern drive servicing. Pre-season grooming, trailer WOFs and wash down facilities are also available.
